Are there vocal versions on this CD, or instrumental versions only?

Reinhard Popp has confirmed the information I took from an automatic translation of the track list: A few (historical) vocal recordings are included.

Once I have received my copy (which has been shipped today), I will give you more detailed information.

I own this great item. There are vocal as well as as instrumental versions of the Japanese anthem. Very interesting is the "vocal interpretation" of quite an aged voice, it seems to be the former emperor of Japan.
There are also different pieces that I cannot really define, but in total: this CD is very worthful and nice.

I received my copy from Amazon Japan.

The CD comes with a 56-page booklet in Japanese (printed in tategaki, i.e. from top to bottom, right to left, back to front). I cannot clearly identify all tracks, but I will give you some information on a few recordings. BTW, there are 26 (not 25) tracks – the actual #23 is missing on the Amazon website.

03: Instrumental of the first Kimigayo setting (1869) by John William Fenton.

05: Instrumental, gagaku style (traditional court music).

08: Solo voice and piano, followed by some explanations.

09-18: Historical recordings made from 1903 to 1938.

11-14: Vocals from 1909, 1915, 1930 and 1934.

16: Instrumental performed by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1938.

17-26: Compositions quoting Kimigayo.

22: Excerpt from "Paraphrase on the Hymns of the Allies" (according to the booklet: "Paraphrase on the Hymns of Seven Nations") op. 96 (1914/15) by Alexander Glazunov (teacher of Dmitri Shostakovich).

23: Excerpt from the 1st act of the opera "Madama Butterfly" (1904) by Giacomo Puccini.

24: Excerpt from the music for the movie "La Bataille" (1931) by André Gailhard. A French adaptation of Kimigayo is sung ("Règne le Mikado").

25: Complete live recording of a Coronation Prelude by some Japanese composer. The Prelude culminates in the most impressive arrangement of Kimigayo I have ever heard: an extremely slow choral-symphonic rendition with a duration of approx. 3:30 min.

Highly recommended – even if you don't understand the liner notes completely!

I am getting this CD as I type this message, being mailed from Japan (was ordered from Amazon, but couldn't read the kanji). I have no doubts about this CD, it is going to be pretty good.

I got the CD this afternoon and it is pretty good CD. It is very interesting to hear some of the variants that were introduced on the CD.

Yes, there are vocal recordings. Some of the recordings have the instrumental played first, then the vocal version starts.
