Lijepa nasha domovino

Lijepa Nasha Domovino,
Oj junachka zemljo mila,
Stare slave djedovino,
Da bi vazda sretna bila!

Mila, kano si nam slavna,
Mila si nam ti jedina,
Mila kuda si nam ravna,
Mila kuda si planina!

Teci Savo, Dravo teci,
Nit ti, Dunav, silu gubi!
Sinje more, svijetu reci,
Da svoj narod Hrvat ljubi!

Dok mu njive sunce grije,
Dok mu hrashche bura vije,
Dok mu mrtve grobak krije,
Dok mu zhivo srce bije.

*without original Croatian letters, I subsituted them with 'sh,' 'ch' nad 'zh'

English translation

Our Beautiful Homeland

Our beautiful homeland,
O so fearless and gracious.
Our fathers' ancient glory,
May you be blessed forever.

Dear, you are our only glory,
Dear, you are our only one,
Dear, we love your plains,
Dear, we love your mountains.

Sava*, Drava*, keep on flowing,
Danube, do not lose your vigour,
Deep blue sea, tell the world,
That a Croat loves his homeland.

Whilst his fields are kissed by sunshine,
Whilst his oaks are whipped by wild winds,
Whilst his dear ones go to heaven,
Whilst his live heart beats.

*Sava and Drava are rivers flowing through Croatia

French translation by Henri Carion (1812-1892)

Notre belle patrie

Quelle est belle notre patrie!
Feconde mere de heros,
A jamais sois fiere et cherie,
Antique legs de leurs travaux.

Notre amour egal a ta gloire,
Notre amour est seul tout a toi.
Nous aimons tes plaines de moire,
Tes montagnes au port de roi.

Roule o Save: tes flots rapides,
Et toi, Danube, hate ton cours,
Azur, a tes rives splendides,
Du Croate dis les amours.

Tant qu’au soleil luiront tes plaines,
Patrie, et que sur tes hauteurs
La foudre ebranlera nos chenes,
Jusqu’a la tombe, a toi nos coeurs!

Hello,

I have a question.
In the first line of verse 3, many national anthem websites typed "Teci Dravo, Savo teci," this is different with the words you typed; are the words on those anthem sites wrong??

Hi Davie!

A good question. There has been a lot of confusion about that in Croatia too. You see, in the Law on State Emblems and National Anthem of Republic of Croatia (which you can find here: http://www.vlada.hr/Download/2002/11/19/Zakon_o_grbu_zastavi_i_himni_RH_te_zasta... only in Croatian) lyrics read "Teci Dravo, Savo teci" but I never heard it performed with those lyrics. On the other hand, on the site of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Croatia you will find the lyrics with "...Savo..." in the first position. That version is sung on all official occasions. My guess is that there has been a misprint in the Law which hasn't been rectified yet. It would appear that we are all right. Those sites qoute the law and I present how the national anthem is sung in practice.

Reinhard Popp has sent me two vocals which use "Teci Dravo, Savo teci". Can someone can find a historic recording, or a copy of the original to see what the original words were?

E-mail from Reinhard Popp Quote:
I have 2 vocal recordings of the song which have been recorded when Croatian was part of socialist Yugoslavija  (the choirs are singing " Teci Savo, Dravo tevi") and I have 5 more vocal recordings when it was anthem of the independant Republic of Croatia (the choirs are singing now "Tevi Dravo, Savo teci".

I just had another phone call to the croatian embassy to Berlin and they confirmed, that "Tevi Draco, Savo tevi" now is the official arrangment of the second verse of the national anthem.

Best regards
Reinhard

I have done more research, and I have found some pages which list "Teci Savo, Dravo tevi".
http://www.hrt.hr/vijesti/arhiv/98/06/10/d1_hrv.html
http://www.mvp.hr/MVP.asp?pcpid=63
http://www.hr/darko/etf/et12.html

Also, the version sent to me by Josko Bublic is sung "Teci Savo, Dravo tevi".
http://www.nationalanthems.us/anthems/Croatia2.zip

I have made more inquiries about the lyrics. I will post more information when I have it.

The words to the Croatian national anthem was written by Antun Mihanović . They were first printed in Danica (The Morning Star) magazine in 1835, under the title "Hrvatska domovina" ("Croatian Homeland"). The music was composed later (1840s) by Josip Runjanin, a Croatian Serb, on the basis of Donizetti's "O sole piu ratto" from the opera "Lucia di Lammermoor". Later, in 1861, the score went through some minor changes done by V. Lichtenegger. In 1891 the song was first sung as the national anthem at an exhibition held by the Croatian-Slavonian Economic Society in Zagreb. It was readopted a year before Croatia achieved independence from Yugoslavia in December 1990. Only the first and last eight lines are used officially.

Update from Joško Bublic:

Quote:
Till 1995, official verse was "Teci Savo, Dravo teci"; You still can find
those words on Croatian Government Web Site  (www.vlada.hr). President
Tudjman (1922 - 1999) suggested Parliament to transform this very verse in new order; north by south (river Sava is southern Croatian border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia in one small part, while Drava is
northern Croatian border with Hungary); so current and official verse
sounds "Teci Dravo, Savo teci". You can find correct lyrics on www.mvp.hr
(Ministry of foreign affairs). He (the president) claimed that original
verse from 1846 was "Teci Dravo, Savo teci". Anyway, correct and official
verse in anthem is "Teci Dravo, Savo teci", as it is confirmed by
Constitution of Republic of Croatia in 1995. The sung version I sent you
was performed 1991, and that version was correct according to law until
constitutional changes in 1995.

When I am listening to the anthem vocal versions available in the forum, I suppose that some words in the 15th line sound like "grossak krije", or "grobsak krije", or "grob sakrije", instead of the words "grobak krije" written by Domagoj and Davie...

Am I correct?  Could anyone help me? ???

Yes, I suppose you're right. Look few posts higher - at the sheet from Spanish site. There's grob sakrije too.

Yes Veviem, you heard correctly "...grob sakrije..." As Mr. Bublic explained, lyrics have chaged in 1995.

Actually, words were rearranged and modified through the years and "Lijepa naša domovino" first received official recognition as the anthem of Croatia in 1972. Lyrics of the anthem from the constitution of Socialist Republic of Croatia (1972) differ from lyrics which became official in 1990 and later modified in 1995.

An important note on the Spanish sheet music: These lyrics were official during the reign of fascistic Ustaša regime (1941-1945).

Repost the current official words:

Unsere schöne Heimat (German Translation)

Schöne, unsere Heimat
Heldenhafte liebe Heimat,
Alten Ruhmes Vätererbe,
Mögest du ewig glücklich sein!

Du liebe, wie bist du uns ruhmreich,
Als einzige bist du uns lieb,
Lieb bist du uns, wo du eben bist,
Lieb bist du uns, wo du Gebirge bist.

Fließe, Save, und du, Drau, fließe,
Auch du, Donau, verliere deine Kraft nicht.
Blaues Meer, sag der Welt,
Dass der Kroate sein Volk liebt,

Solange die Sonne seine Felder wärmt,
Solange die Bura in seinen Eichen rauscht,
Solange der Totengräber seine Toten bedeckt,
Solange in ihm ein lebendes Herz schlägt.

Notre Belle Patrie (French Translation)

Notre belle patrie,
Oh cher et héroïque pays,
Patrie à la gloire ancestrale,
Sois toujours heureuse !

Chère, autant que tu es glorieuse,
Toi seule nous est chère.
Chère, là où ton sol est plat,
Chère, là où il est montagneux.

Coule Drava, Sava coule,

And the beautiful, singable Bulgarian translation:

Хубава наша родино,
о, юнашка земьо мила,
старославна татковино,
вечно да си ми щастлива!

Мила, колкото и славна,
мила си ни ти едничка.
Мила си ни где си равна,
Мила си ни и планинска!

Лей се, Драво, Саво, лей се,
нито Дунав сила губи,
пред света море гордей се,
че Хърватска ние любим.

Докле нивя огрява слънце,
докле в дъбрави буря вие,
докле тачим наште мъртви,
докле сърцето живо бие!

A Portuguese translation:

Nossa bela pátria

Nossa bela pátria,
Heróica terra querida,
Glória de nossos ancestrais,
Sê feliz eternamente!

Amada, para nós és gloriosa,
Amada, és única para nós,
Amada onde és plana,
Amada onde és montanhosa!

Corre, Sava, corre, Drava,

As Vladimir said, Ustaša regime used the same anthem with some minor modification of the lyrics (i.e. first line in the third vrese). For details please take a look at http://www.nationalanthems.us/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=lyrics_eu;action=displ...
