A better English translation is:

United forever in friendship and labour,
Our mighty republics shall ever endure!
The Great Soviet Union will live through the ages,
The dream of a people, their fortress secure!

Chorus
Long live our Soviet Motherland, built by the people's mighty hand!
Long live our people, united and free!
Strong in our friendship tried by fire, long may our crimson flag inspire!
Shining in glory, for all man to see!

Through days dark and stormy when great Lenin led us,
Our eyes saw the bright sun of freedom above,
And Stalin our leader with faith in the people,
Inspired us to build up the land that we love!

Chorus

We fought for the future, destroyed the invader,
And brought to our homeland the laurels of fame.
Our glory will live in the memory of nations,
And all generations will honour her name!

This is the 1944 version with Stalin and WWII references. They were changed in 1977 to some more mundane stuff about Lenin and the Party.

I can provide a transliterated Russian version if anyone is interested.

Not that it's a *better* English translation, but it's the *official* one. (The Soviet anthem was unique in the fact that the government made official translations to match the lyrics for a lot of different languages, including English and the 15 official languages of the USSR.

However, since it's a translation to fit the lyrics, it might not do the original Russian words justice. While I haven't looked at the link provided yet, the English translation provided as a link above woudl probalby reflect the original meaning of the text. (On my new page, if not my existing one, I will have both the Official English lyrics and the translation from Russian, to let people compare.)

I do not seriously think this is the official version, since this was sung by American Paul Robeson. I remeber always reading the English as "Unbreakable Union of Freeborn Republics...."

If you look closely at the "Unbreakable Union" translation, you'll notice it doesn't fit the music. The verses do, but the chorus does not. The "official" Soviet translation into English does fit the melody, verses and chorus.

I wish I had a literal translation of the Russian text, I have a few Russian-speaking visitors to my page who have volunteered their translation services, I might call in a favour ...

I think this thread should be merged into "Soviet Union 1944-1991." And eventually, as Dieter has said, we probably need separate threads for "Soviet Union 1944 version" and "Soviet Union 1977-1991."
