The Star-Spangled Banner

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wiped out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Quote:
The following stanza was written by George Spowers around 1824 in an attempt to redress the balance of the anti-British sentiment in Key's third verse. However, it was also considered to drag the National Anthem into unnecessary politics, and is rarely sung:

But hush'd be that strain! They our Foes are no longer;
Lo Britain the right hand of Friendship extends,
And Albion's fair Isle we behold with affection
The land of our Fathers - the land of our Friends!
Long, long may we flourish,
Columbia and Britain,
In amity still may your children be found,
And the Star-Spangled Banner and Red Cross together
Wave free and triumphant the wide world around!

Probably the best known additional stanza was written by Oliver-Wendell Holmes during the Civil War, and was intended to decry treasonable acts against the US flag:

When our land is illumined with liberty's smile,
If a foe from within strikes a blow at her glory,
Down, down with the traitor that tries to defile
The flag of the stars, and the page of her story!
By the millions unchained,
Who their birthright have gained
We will keep her bright blazon forever unstained;
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave,
While the land of the free is the home of the brave.

Note:
There is a variant of Holmes's stanza where "tries to defile" is replaced by "dares to defile".

This is the earliest known manuscript of Francis Scott Key's poem. It is probably one of several drafts that Key made before sending the copy to the printer. Key gave this version to Judge Joseph H. Nicholson, who was married to Key's wife's sister.

Sheet music with Spanish lyrics, translated from English by Francis Haffkine Snow:

...
...
...
...

Note: In the following text version, diacritics are omitted.

Verse

In seinem unbeständigen Wehen bald entrollt, bald verbirgt?

Staras Kuraĝe (Esperanto Translation of Verses 1 & 4)

(Japanese Translation)

The Polish translation (verse 1 only):

Gwiaździsty Sztandar

O, powiedz, czy widzisz,
w świetle wczesnego świtu
to, co tak dumnie witaliśmy
w ostatnim migotaniu zmierzchu?
Czyje pasy i błyszczące gwiazdy
podczas ryzykownego lotu
ponad wałami obronnymi obserwowaliśmy
jak wspaniale płynęły?
A czerwień oślepiających rakiet,
bomby wybuchające w powietrzu
dały dowód przez noc,
że nasza flaga wciąż była.

Refren:
O, powiedz czy gwiaździsta
flaga jeszcze powiewa
nad krajem wolnych
i ojczyzną odważnych?

Bahasa Melayu:

O katakan, dapatkah anda lihat, di waktu fajar,
Apa yang kami sambut di dinihari?
Bintang terang dan jalur lebar, tatkala pertempuran sengit?
Atas kubu kelihatan, berkibaran megah!
O katakan, bendera berhias bintang masih berkibar
Di tanah merdeka dan yang berani?

祖国自有天相,胜利和平在望;

morgonrodnadens brand,

Icke flykten ens gav
skydd åt hyrknekt och slav
mot segrarens svärd undan jämmer och grav.
Men, du stjärnströdda flagga, din glans sprider du

There are versions in which the fourth verse is wrong... instead of "then conquer we must, when our cause it is just" it's mistakenly written (and maybe even SUNG!) "then conquer we must, FOR our cause it is just"!!! I did a rudimentary google search and 1 in 8 instances of the lyrics online are wrong... This is VERY sad...

When I was researching the US anthem some time ago, I seem to remember reading somewhere that the wording you referred to was first used during the time of FDR and the New Deal, when the government was expanding at an unprecedented rate. However, now I can't find any evidence to support that.
Even though there were a few small differences between the compositions written by Key, the substitution of the word "for" in place of "when" is not in any of the Key manuscripts I have seen, and is certainly not in the original at the MD Historical Society. (On a side note, if anyone is ever planning on going to the MD Historical Society to see the original manuscript, don't bet on seeing it. It is housed in a nice case [built with Federal funds], which is a sort of safe, which opens every 20 or 30 min. to display the manuscript for just a few moments. But on the day when I drove down to Baltimore to see it, the case was malfunctioning and wouldn't open. Angry)

While I was looking through some links I had saved, I found an interesting paragraph about the usage of the verse written during the Civil War:

Quote:
From the first, it's [the song's] most loyal partisans were the Army and the Navy. The wars in which we participated during the nineteenth century did as much as anything to increase the popularity of the song. During the War Between the States, "The Star-Spangled Banner" was claimed by both the North and the South. At Fort Sumter, where the opening shot of the war was fired, this song was played when the American flag was lowered in token of surrender by the Federal forces. In indignation over this episode, Oliver Wendell Holmes added a fifth stanza to the song which appeared in northern editions of songbooks of the period. It was again played at the raising of the American flag following the reoccupation of Fort Sumter with the conclusion of this war.

German versification by Niklas Müller, 1861

1. O, sagt, könnt ihr seh'n
Bei der Dämmerung Schein,
Was so stolz wir begrüßten
In Abendroths Gluten?
Dess Streiffen und Sterne,
Durch Kämpfender Reih'n,
Auf dem Walle wir sahen
So wenniglich fluten;
Die Raketen am Ort
Und die Bomben vom Fort,
Sie zeigten bei Nacht,
Daß die Flagge noch dort.

O sagt, ob das Banner
Mit Sternen besäet
Über'm Lande der Frei'n
Und der Tapfern noch weht?

2. Am Strand, kaum geseh'n
Durch den Nebel jetzt noch,
Wo des Feinds stolzer Haufen
In Schweigsamkeit waltet;
Was ist's, daß der Wind,
Auf dem Thurme so hoch,
Wenn er günstig d'ran bläst,
Halb verdeckt, halb entfaltet?
Und jetzt faßt es den Strahl,
Wie er fällt in das Thal,
Und glanzet in Herrlichkeit
Jetzt auf dem Pfahl.

O das ist das Banner
Mit Sternen besäet,
Das noch über den Frei'n
Und den Tapferen weht!

3. Und wo ist der Schwarm,
Der vermaß sich so sehr,
Daß des Krieges Gewühl
Und Verwirrung der Schlachten,
Kein Land, keine Heimath
Gewähre uns mehr?
Ihr Blut hat verwischet
Ihr freventlich Trachten.
Und umsonst hat gesucht
Sklav und Miethling die Flucht
Beim Schrecken des Kampfs
Und der tödtlichen Wucht.

Und siegreich das Banner
Mit Sternen besäet,
Über'm Lande der Frei'n
Und der Tapfern noch weht!

4. Und so soll es sein stets,
Wo Männer die Hand
Sich reichen, entgegen
Des Aufruhrs Gewalten;
Mit Frieden und Sieg
Mag gesegnet das Land
Dann preisen die Macht,
Die uns einig erhalten;
Denn der Sieg muß uns sein,
Wo die Sache so rein;
Und das sei der Wahlspruch:
"Auf Gott trau allein!"

Und siegreich das Banner
Mit Sternen besäet
Über'm Lande der Frei'n
Und der Tapfern noch weht!

Another German versification by an unknown author;
published between 1861-1864 by H. De Marsan, Publishers of Songs,
ballads, toy books, etc.; No. 54 Chatham Street, New York.

1. O! sagt, könnt ihr seh'n
In des Morgenroths Strahl,
Was so stolz wir im schei-
denden Abendroth grüßten?
Die Sterne, die Streifen,
Die wehend vom Wall,
Im tödlichen Kampf
Uns den Anblick versüßten?
Hoch flattere die Fahne
In herrlicher Pracht,
Beim Leuchten der Bomben
Durch dunkle Nacht.

O! sagt, ob das Banner,
Mit Sternen besä't,
Über'm Lande der Freien
Und Braven noch weht?

2. Vom Strand aus zu seh'n
Durch die Nebel der See,
Wo Feindes-Schaar ruhet
In drohendem Schweigen,
Was ist's daß die Wind'
Auf befestigter Höh'
Mit neckendem Weh'n
Bald verhüllen, bald zeigen?
Jetzt faßt es der Sonne
Hell leuchtenden Strahl,
Jetzt scheint es vom Berge,
Jetzt weht's über's Thal.

O! Es ist ja das Banner
Mit Sternen besä't,
Das über'm Land der Freien
Und Braven noch weht.

3. Und wo ist die Band',
Die verwegentlich schwor,
Daß die Gräuel des Krieges,
Das Wüthen der Schlachten,
Soll't rauben uns Heimath
Und Vaterlands Flor?
Ihr Herzblut bezahle
Das frevelnde Trachten.
Keine Gnade noch Schonung
Für Herr und für Knecht,
Nur Tod sei die Loosung,
Dann sind wir gerächt.

Und siegreich das Banner
Mit Sterne besä't,
Über'm Lande der Freien
Und Braven noch weht.

4. Und wo Männer für
Freiheit und Vaterland
Vereinigt stehn,
Da sende von Oben,
Den Kämpfern errettend
Die mächtige Hand,
Die Freien, die müssen
Den Vater dort loben.
Gerecht ist die Sache,
Auf Gott wir vertrau'n
D'rum sei die Loosung,
Auf ihn wir fest bau'n

Und siegreich das Banner,
Mit Sternen besä't,
Über'm Lande der Freien
Und Braven noch weht.

Both versions are written in very old-fashioned German and do not correspond with modern German orthography.

The national anthem was played twice (that I heard of) during the Presidental Inauguration.

Once during the actual ceremony (verse one only), and once during the National Prayer Service (first and fourth verse).

Unofficial stanza in a 1991 recording by Sandy Patti

And still we can see, as the years have gone by,
there's a dream in our land like a flame that keeps burning.
And the lantern of hope from the harbor still shines.
Those who seek freedom's dream, to its light are still turning.
Now we look to the skies and we lift up our eyes,
for we know with the dawn we will see our flag rise.
And this is our star spangled banner unfurled
as a sign to the free and a hope to the world.

Note: I have a copy of this recording from the CD The Joyous Sounds of America Vol. II, and it can be heard on the Christian Broadcasting Network. However due to copyright issues, i'll will not post it here unless someone else has done so already. Another note, I first heard of this recording days after 9/11, so it is in heavy rotation on the Christian stations.
