Original German Words

Trittst im Morgenrot daher,
Seh' ich dich im Strahlenmeer,
Dich, du Hocherhabener, Herrlicher!
Wenn der Alpen Firn sich rötet,
Betet, freie Schweizer, betet.
Eure fromme Seele ahnt
(repeat)
Gott im hehren Vaterland!
Gott, den Herrn, im hehren Vaterland!

Kommst im Abendglühn daher,
Find' ich dich im Sternenheer,
Dich, du Menschenfreundlicher, Liebender!
In des Himmels lichten Räumen
Kann ich froh und selig träumen;
Denn die fromme Seele ahnt
(repeat)
Gott im hehren Vaterland!
Gott, den Herrn, im hehren Vaterland!

Ziehst im Nebelflor daher,
Such' ich dich im Wolkenmeer,
Dich, du Unergründlicher, Ewiger!
Aus dem grauen Luftgebilde
Bricht die Sonne klar und milde,
Und die fromme Seele ahnt
(repeat)
Gott im hehren Vaterland!
Gott, den Herrn, im hehren Vaterland!

Fährst im wilden Sturm daher,
Bist du selbst uns Hort und Wehr,
Du, allmächtig Waltender, Rettender!
In Gewitternacht und Grauen
Laßt uns kindlich ihm vertrauen!
Ja, die fromme Seele ahnt
(repeat)
Gott im hehren Vaterland!
Gott, den Herrn, im hehren Vaterland!

English Translation

When the morning skies grow red
And o'er us their radiance shed,
Thou, O Lord, appeareth in their light.
When the Alps glow bright with splendour,
Pray to God, to Him surrender,
For you feel and understand,
(repeat)
That He dwelleth in this land.
(repeat)

In the sunset Thou art nigh
And beyond the starry sky,
Thou, O loving Father, ever near.
When to Heaven we are departing,
Joy and bliss Thou'lt be imparting,
For we feel and understand
(repeat)
That Thou dwellest in this land.
(repeat)

When dark clouds enshroud the hills
And gray mist the valley fills,
Yet Thou art not hidden from Thy sons.
Pierce the gloom in which we cower
With Thy sunshine's cleansing power
Then we'll feel and understand
(repeat)
That God dwelleth in this land.
(repeat)

Remark on the English Translation

Verse 3 of this free translation combines elements of the German original verses 3 (gray mist, sunshine's cleansing power) and 4 (dark clouds, gloom).

Italian Translations

Apparently, there are two different Italian versions, one with four verses and one with three verses. The official version uses two verses from each translation.

First Version by Camillo Valsangiacomo

Quando il ciel di porpora
Nuovo dì colora,
Te rivela aurora,
O Signor!
Nel tripudio del matino
A Te grato io m'inchino:
Libertà, concordia, amor,
Libertà, concordia, amor,
All' Elvezia serba ognor,
All' Elvezia serba ognor.

Se di stelle è un giubilo
La celeste sfera,
Te ritrovo a sera,
O Signor!
Nella notte silenziosa
L'alma mia in Te riposa:
Libertà, concordia, amor,
Libertà, concordia, amor,
All' Elvezia serba ognor,
All' Elvezia serba ognor.

Quando tristi velano
Atre nubi il cielo,
Te presente anelo,
O Signor!
Se m'ascondi la Tua luce,
Il mio spirito a Te m'adduce:
Libertà, concordia, amor,
Libertà, concordia, amor,
All' Elvezia serba ognor,
All' Elvezia serba ognor.

Quando rugge e strepita
Impetuoso il nembo,
M'è ostel Tuo grembo,
O Signor!
In ti fido, onnipossente:
Deh, proteggi nostra gente:
Libertà, concordia, amor,
Libertà, concordia, amor,
All' Elvezia serba ognor,
All' Elvezia serba ognor.

Second Version

Quando bionda aurora
il mattin c'indora
l'alma mia t'adora
re del ciel!
Quando l'alpe già rosseggia
a pregare allor t'atteggia;
in favor del patrio suol,
in favor del patrio suol,
cittadino Iddio lo vuol,
cittadino Dio, si Dio lo vuol.

Se di nubi un velo
m'asconde il tuo cielo
pel tuo raggio anelo
Dio d'amore!
Fuga o sole quei vapori
e mi rendi i tuoi favori:
di mia patria deh! Pietà
di mia patria deh! Pietà
brilla, o sol di verità,
brilla sol, o sol di verità!

Tu mi sei vicino,
splendi nel mattino,
segni il mio cammino,
con bontà.
O Signore, quando è sera,
mi rivolgo a Té in preghiera,
penso al bene che mi fai,
alla terra que mi dai,
splenda a noi la tua bontà,
dona pace e libertà.

Official Version

Polish translation - 1st verse:

Psalm Szwajcarów

Kiedy poranne niebo promienieje
Ty, Panie jesteś na nim w jasności
Ty, najsławniejszy, najwspanialszy.
Kiedy Alpy promienieją chwałą
Módlcie się Szwajcarzy, módlcie się.
Czujemy i rozumiemy
Czujemy i rozumiemy
Boga w naszej Ojczyźnie
Boga, Pana w naszej Ojczyźnie.

Here are the Romansch (an official language despite the use by less than 1% of the people) lyrics to the Swiss national anthem:

En l'aurora la damaun ta salida il carstgaun,
spiert etern dominatur, Tutpussent!
Cur ch'ils munts straglischan sura,
ura liber Svizzer, ura.
Mia olma senta ferm,

fidanza crescha.
Mia olma senta ferm,

ti inperscrutabel spiert, Tutpussent!
Tschiel e terra t'obedeschan
vents e nivels secundeschan.
Mia olma senta ferm,

stas ti franc a nus fidaivel.
Mia olma senta ferm,

Here are the French lyrics to the Swiss national anthem:

Sur nos monts, quand le soleil
Annonce un brillant réveil,
Et prédit d'un plus beau jour le retour,
Les beautés de la patrie
Parlent à l'âme attendrie;

Notre cœur pressent encore le Dieu fort;
Dans l'orage et la détresse
Il est notre forteresse;
Offrons-lui des cœurs pieux:
Dieu nous bénira des cieux,
Dieu nous bénira du haut des cieux.

Des grands monts vient le secours;

Different Romansh (Surselvish?) Words

There are several Romansh dialects. The Schweizerpsalm has been translated into at least two of them, i.e. Ladin (Gion Antoni Bühler) and Sursilvan (Alfons Tuor), and also into an artificially created standard Romansh (Ignaz Cathomen). This "Rumantsch Grischun" has not been very well accepted but was used for the official recording. The lyrics posted by akira are Cathomen's version.

Here is a Romansh version with three verses that you find on several websites. The language is similar to Sursilvan but I'm not sure whether it's identical with it:

Cu las pezzas dal sulegl
Splendureschan bein marvegl,
Ves jeu Tei, sublim Signur, Creatur!
Cu las brischan dall' aurora,
Ura, liber Svizzer, ura!
Ti has lu in sentiment,
Ti has lu in sentiment,
De tiu Bab sul firmament,
De tiu Bab, tiu Bab, sul firmament.

Cu il serendent sulegl
Resplendescha da smarvegl,
Anflel Tei, miu Creatur, Amatur!
Vesel nundumbreirlas steilas,
Tarlischontas sco candeilas.
Jeu hai lu in sentiment,
Jeu hai lu in sentiment,
De tiu Bab sul firmament,
De tiu Bab, tiu Bab, sul firmament.

Cu orcans sut il sulegl
Mettan tut en discavegl,
Stai cun mei, o Directeur, Salvatur!
Els orcans ils pli sgarscheivels.
Su cun Tiu agid statteivels.
Jeu hai lu in sentiment,
Jeu hai lu in sentiment,
De tiu Bab sul firmament,
De tiu Bab, tiu Bab, sul firmament.

Complete Sursilvan and Ladin versions from a reliable source will follow in the next post.

Remark on the French Words

Verses 1, 2 and 3 of the French version by Charles Chatelanat correspond to verses 1, 2 and 4 of the German original. Chatelanat's last verse has no relationship to the original words.

Here is a website with the history of the anthem, lyrics in four languages, and some streaming audio files (possibly non-downloadable mp3s?).

A quadralingual version (one verse) is sung on several of the recordings, with slight variations in lyrics. The first three segments seem to be consistent (German, Italian, and French, in that order). The fourth segment is based on the Rumantsch Grischun version, sometimes with German words mixed in:

Trittst im Morgenrot daher,
Seh' ich dich im Strahlenmeer,

l'alma mia t'adora
re del ciel!

Les beautés de la patrie
Parlent à l'âme attendrie;

Mia olma senta ferm,
Mia olma senta ferm
Dieu en tschiel, il bab etern,
Dieu en tschiel, il bab etern.

I noticed that there are two different ways of singing the line "Parlent à l'âme attendrie", and both seem to be correct:
  • [parla ...]
  • [parlǝta ...]

I'm surprised with he number of German speakers on the board (and I know there's a few French speakers as well) that there only seems to be translations existing for 3 of the 4 verses! Is the English translation "official"? Is it a translation of one of the languages? Which one? (I doubt they all say exactly the same thing). And why are we lacking a fourth English verse if there are four verses in the other languages?

It seems to me that the versions in different languages are only loosely related to each other, and the English versification (which I assume is not "official" in the sense that it is not an official version of the anthem) is itself only a loose translation. There are different pieces of the different language versions that resemble each other, some closely, but as a whole they are semi-independent versifications. (It is somewhat similar to the situation with the Canadian anthem, although those two versions are really completely independent.) If one wanted to do an "accurate" English translation, you would have to have four separate translations, one for each official version. (I should say AT LEAST four, since one could argue that there are additional "semi-official" versions, including the quadra-lingual version.)
