The anthem of the fascist party "Giovinezza" (The Youth) was added to the (at that time) Italian national anthem "Marcia Reale", when Benito Mussolini seized power in 1922. Therefore, during the time of the fascist regime, Italy had a double anthem (similar to nazi Germany), consisting of the national anthem and the party song of the ruling party.

Information by Dieter on 18.10.2004 in the anthem download section:

Quote:
There are several text versions of "Giovinezza". The lyrics used as national anthem were written by Salvatore Gotta.

After Mussolini's deposition, Oxilia's lyrics were sung in the short-lived Italian Social Republic (Repubblica Sociale Italiana) proclaimed by "Il Duce".

Hereunder is the original text of Nino Oxilia and the lyrics by Salvatore Gotta. According to http://www.ingeb.org/songs/giovinez.html, the Gotta lyrics have been written in 1939. If this is true, it seems so that first the Oxilia text has been used and only later the lyrics were changed to the Gotta version which glorifies Benito Mussolini.

Original text by Nino Oxilia, 1909:

1. Son giunti i giorni lieti
degli studi e degli amori
o compagni in alto i cuori
il passato salutiam.
È la vita una battaglia
è il cammino irto d'inganni
ma siam forti abbiam
l'avvenir non temiam.

Refrain:

Giovinezza, giovinezza
primavera di bellezza
della vita nell'asprezza
il tuo canto squilla e va.

2. Stretti stretti sotto braccio
d'una piccola sdegnosa
trecce bionde, labbra rosa
occhi azzurri come il mar.
Ricordate in primavera
crepuscoli vermigli
tra le verdi ombre dei tigli
i fantastici vagar.

Refrain:

3. Salve nostra adolescenza
te commossi salutiamo
Per la vita ce ne andiamo
il tuo viso cesserà.
Ma se un dì un grido
dei fratelli non redenti
alla morte sorridenti
il nemico ci vedrà.

Refrain:

Text by Salvatore Gotta (1939? Huh )

1. Salve o popole d'Eroi
Salve a patria immortale
Son rinati i figli tuoi
Con la fè nell' ideale
Il valor dei tuoi guerrieri,
La virtù dei pionieri
La vision dell' Atighieri
Oggi brilla in tutti i cuor.

Refrain:

Giovinezza, Giovinezza,
Primavera di bellezza
Della vita nell' asprezza
Il tuo canto squilla e va!
E per Benito Mussolini,
Eja eja alalà.
E per la nostra Patria bella,
Eja eja alalà.
*1)

2. Dell' Italia nei confini
Son rifatti gli italiani;
Li ha rifatti Mussolini
Per la guerra di domani.
Per la gloria del lavora
Per la Pace e per l'alloro,
Per la gogna di coloro
Che la patria rinnegar.

Refrain:

3. I Poeti e gli artigiani
I signori e i contadini
Con orgoglio d'italiani
Giuran fede a Mussolini.
Non v'è povero quartiere
Che non mandi le sue schiere
Che non spieghi le bandiere
Del fascismo redentor.

Refrain:

*1) This part does not appear in all vocal recordings.

(includes some other text versions, including one that has been used in nazi Germany)

Important note: The inclusion of this historical anthem does not in any way reflect my personal politics or beliefs.

According to Reinhard Popp, assertions that the Gotta lyrics were written in 1939 are absolutely wrong. RP has several original records from 1927, 1928, 1933, 1935 and 1937 with this version.

Also, the German Reichsrundfunk (Reich Radio) produced a recording with the Gotta lyrics sung by the "Dietrich-Eckart-Spielschar" (a school theater group named after a fanatic anti-Semitic writer) in May 1933.

Addendum and Correction from Reinhard Popp

Addendum

At Mussolini's inauguration, words written by Marcello Manni were sung as official lyrics of the "Inno dei Fascisti – Inno ufficiale". In 1924, Salvatore Gotta wrote new words referring to "Il Duce", which were exclusively in use until 1943.

Correction concerning the RSI

In very rare cases, even Reinhard Popp makes a mistake. He sent me the following correction:

The version of "Giovinezza" sung in the RSI (Repubblica Sociale Italiana) did not use Oxilia's lyrics. (I have corrected the corresponding post in the Download section.) The record from 1944 is labelled as follows:

Giovinezza
Inno ufficiale della RSI
(G. Blanc / G. Gastaldo)

Oxilia had written his appeal to Italian youth long before fascism became an organized political movement. The new lyrics by Manni and Gotta referred to fascism and Mussolini's person. The very militant words used in the RSI are apparently a mix of several versions. It is not clear whether Gastaldo (RP only knows a composer with this name) wrote these lyrics or whether he arranged the recording.

"Hitlerleute" (German version of "Giovinezza")

1. In dem Kampfe um die Heimat
Starben viele Hitlerleute.
Aber keiner denkt ans Klagen,
Jeder will es mutig wagen.

Siegen heißt es oder ewig Sklave sein!

Refrain:

|: Hitlerleute, Hitlerleute,

1. Son passati i giorni lieti
delle danze e degli amori

A bit of history about "Giovinezza":

The first title of "Giovinezza" was "Commiato" in 1909. In 1910, in Bardonecchia (Piedmont, Italy), during a training course for Ufficiali degli Alpini Sciatori (Officials of the Skiers of the Mountain Troops of the Italian Royal Army), GIUSEPPE BLANC (who was frequenting that course) singed and played "Giovinezza" by Piano. The Alpini liked so much that song, that they adopted it as official "Hymn of the Skiers" ("Inno degli Sciatori"). This song was also played in Lybia in 1911 by the Italian Soliders that were fighting in Africa. In 1917 it became "Inno degli Arditi" ("Hymn of the Arditi"). The "Arditi" were particular Soldiers of the Italian Royal Army and then it was used by the Fascists (P.S. - The first Fascits fought in World War I in the Arditi). In 1922 "Giovinezza" was sung by the Fascists during the "March on Rome"; since that time it was considerated the official Hymn of the Fascist Regime. The refrain "Giovinezza, giovinezza..." was adopted by the Arditi's Lieutenant MARCELLO MANNI. Marcello Manni adopted this refrain from a Choir of an Operetta titled "Festa dei Fiori" composed by Giuseppe Blanc. The words of "Festa dei Fiori" were written by NINO OXILIA. The poet VITTORIO EMANUELE BRAVETTA wrote the lyrics for a "Giovinezza's" version singed in Turin, ERNESTO VITALE wrote the lyrics for a version singed in Florence, but the author of the official and definitive version was SALVATOR GOTTA that wrote the official lyrics behind order of Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini.

"Giovinezza: Inno degli Arditi"

1. Allorchè dalla trincea
suona l'ora di battaglia
sempre primo è fiamma nera
che terribile si scaglia.
Col pugnale nella mano,
con la fede dentro il cuore
egli avanza e và lontano
con la gloria ed il valor.

Ritornello:

Giovinezza, Giovinezza,
Primavera di bellezza
nel Fascismo è la salvezza,
della nostra civiltà.
E per Benito Mussolini
eja eja a la la!

2. Del pugnale al fiero lampo
della bomba al granfragore
tutti avanti, tutti al campo:
qui si vince oppur si muore!
Sono giovane e son forte,
non mi trema in petto il cuore:
sorridendo vo alla morte
pria di andare al disonor!

Ritornello:

Giovinezza, Giovinezza,
Primavera di bellezza
nel Fascismo è la salvezza,
della nostra civiltà.
E per Benito Mussolini
eja eja a la la!

3. Col pugnale e con la bomba
nella vita del terrore
quando l'obice rimbomba
non mi trema in petto il cuore,
la mia splendida bandiera
l'ho difesa con onore
è una fiamma tutta nera
che divampa in ogni cuor.

Ritornello:

Giovinezza, Giovinezza,
Primavera di bellezza
nel Fascismo è la salvezza,
della nostra civiltà.
E per Benito Mussolini
eja eja a la la!

"Giovinezza: Inno dei Corridoriani"

1. Sventoliamo al Sol di Maggio
il vessillo redentore:
su compagni, su coraggio
della lotta suonan l'ore.
Siamo giovani, siam forti,
non ci trema in petto il cuore;
siam le vigili coorti
di un'idea che mai non muor.

Ritornello:
Giovinezza, giovinezza,
Primavera di bellezza
nella vita dell'ebbrezza
il tuo canto squillerà.

2. Corridoni, la tua schiera
è già pronta alla battaglia.
Con lo sguardo alla bandiera
sui nemici essa si scaglia.
Sul borghese che si stende
nel suo fango e nel suo oro
che ci sfrutta e ognor offende
i Diritti del lavoro.

Ritornello:
Giovinezza, giovinezza,
Primavera di bellezza
nella vita dell'ebbrezza
il tuo canto squillerà.

3. Corridoni, o Duce amato
sorgi, ormai, dalla tua fossa.
Vieni, esulta, è ormai spuntato
il gran dì della riscossa.
Scritto sta sopra i destini
l'avvenire sindacale,
l'alto sogno di Mazzini
la Repubblica social.

Ritornello:
Giovinezza, giovinezza,
Primavera di bellezza
nella vita dell'ebbrezza
il tuo canto squillerà.

P.S. - the Corridorians ("Corridoriani") were the followers of the politic leader Filippo Corridoni.

At Mussolini's inauguration, words written by Marcello Manni were sung as official lyrics of the "Inno dei Fascisti – Inno ufficiale".

The following text from the website http://digilander.libero.it/storiafascismo/Canzoni/Canzoni.htm is entitled as "Inno Ufficiale dei Fascisti (1920)". Is this the one mentioned above? In fact, I do not think it fits with the melody of "Giovinezza", and also the refrain is totally different:

Inno Ufficiale dei Fascisti (1920)

All'armi! All'armi! All'armi siam Fascisti...
Noi del fascio siamo i componenti
la causa sosterrem fino alla morte
e lotteremo sempre forte

noi tutti uniti difenderemo
contro avversari e traditori

noi saprem bene far dileguare
e al grido nostro quella canaglia
dovrà tremar, dovrà tremar...

All'armi! All'armi! All'armi siam Fascisti...
Vittoria in ogni parte porteremo
perchè il coraggio a noi non mancherà
e grideremo sempre forte forte
e sosterremo la nostra causa santa.

In guardia, amici! Che in ogni evento
Noi sempre pronti tutti saremo
finché la Gloria di noi Fascisti
in tutta Italia trionferà.
All'armi! All'armi! All'armi siam Fascisti!

No, this is not the anthem mentioned above, the melody is different. I'm not sure which of the two songs was the actual "Inno Ufficiale dei Fascisti".

What Jan posted above was titled "All'armi: Inno ufficiale dei Fascisti" ("To arms: Official Hymn of the Fascists"). It was a very very popular Fascist song, but the true official Hymn was "Giovinezza". The melody of "All'armi" is totally different from "Giovinezza". Currently there is a Military Hymn/Song very similar to "All'armi" and is titled "Inno dei Bersaglieri Ciclisti" ( see the following thread http://www.nationalanthems.us/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=song_links;action=disp... ).
There were different versions of "All'armi".

All'armi: Inno ufficiale dei Fascisti (1920-1943):
http://www.ilduce.net/Fascismo/All'armi.mp3
From: http://www.ilduce.net/

All'armi (1919-1920)

All'armi! All'armi!
All'armi siam Fascisti!

che ci fa fieri all'ora del cimento.

Non abbia tregua mai la nostra azione
contro i tiranni e contro gli oppressori
che vollero avvilita la Nazione,
e allora la libertà alfin trionferà!

All'armi (1920-1943)

1. All'armi! All'armi! All'armi siam Fascisti!
Noi del Fascismo siamo i componenti,
la causa sosterrem fino alla morte
e lotteremo sempre forte

Ritornello:

3. All'armi! All'armi! All'armi siam Fascisti...

e grideremo sempre forte forte
e sosterremo la nostra causa santa.

Ritornello:

In guardia, amici! Che in ogni evento
Noi sempre pronti tutti saremo
finché la Gloria di noi Fascisti
in tutta Italia trionferà.

All'armi (1943-1945)

All'armi! All'armi!
All'armi siam Fascisti! Terror dei Comunisti!
Noi del fascio siamo i componenti,
la lotta sosterrem fino alla morte
e lotteremo sempre forte

Ritornello:

Sempre inneggiando la Patria bella
che tutti uniti noi difenderemo
contro vigliacchi e traditori
che ad uno ad uno ammazzerem.

P.S. - The version adopted in 1920 was definitive till the R.S.I.. Under the Italian Fascist Regime no song or Hymn was more official than "Giovinezza".

"Giovinezza: Inno Fascista"

1. Su compagni, in forti schiere
marciam verso l'avvenire
siam falangi audaci e fiere
pronte a osare e pronte a ardire.
Trionfi alfine l'ideale
per cui tanto combattemmo:
fratellanza nazionale
d'italiana civiltà.

Ritornello:

Giovinezza, giovinezza,
Primavera di bellezza,
nel Fascismo è la salvezza
della nostra libertà.

2. Non più ignara nè avvilita
resti ancor la nostra gente,
si ridesti a nuova vita
di splendore più possente.
Su, leviamo alta la face
che ci illumini il cammino,
nel lavoro e nella pace
sia la vera libertà.

Ritornello:

Giovinezza, giovinezza,
Primavera di bellezza,
nel Fascismo è la salvezza
della nostra libertà.

3. Ne le veglie di trincea
cupo vento di mitraglia
ci ravvolse alla bandiera
che agitammo alla battaglia.
Vittoriosa al nuovo Sole
stretti a lei dobbiam lottare,
è l'Italia che lo vuole:
per l'Italia vincerem.

Ritornello:

Giovinezza, giovinezza,
Primavera di bellezza,
nel Fascismo è la salvezza
della nostra libertà.

4. Sorgi alfin lavoratore,
giunto è il dì della riscossa,
ti frodarono il sudore
con l'appello alla sommossa.
Giù le bende ai traditori
che ti strinsero a catena;
alla gogna gl'impostori
delle asiatiche virtù.

Ritornello:

Giovinezza, giovinezza,
Primavera di bellezza,
nel Fascismo è la salvezza
della nostra libertà.
È l'Italia che lo vuole
eja eja alalà!

Hi

I don't know if the version of "Giovenezza" with baritone Apollo Granforte has been mentioned. It was recorded in 1926 and released as HMV DA 784.

Mussolini is mentioned in the lyrics but the refrain does not have the lines speaking of him.

all the best

"Hitlerleute" (German version of "Giovinezza")

Many years ago, I came across another German 'adaptation' of the Giovinezza (in fact, only the first four lines), which seems to have been quite popular in the late 1920ties as a parodical, anti-fascist song:

Wird der Nordpol italienisch
und der Mussolini König
dann bezieht er durch Marconi
drahtlos seine Makkaroni

Translation:

If the North Pole becomes Italian
and if Mussolini becomes King
then he will obtain his macaroni
by wireless transmission from Marconi

I can't actually remember where I found it; but besides mocking about Mussolini, it obviously refers to the polar expeditions of Umberto Nobile in 1926 and 1928, and to the Italian-born physicist and radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi:

Quote:
Taistelulaulu

Kuule taistotorven soitto
vaarassa on synnyinmaamme!
Meille kuolo taikka voitto,
veljet, siskot, vannokaamme!
Suomi, poikas sua muistaa,
tahdomme yltäs valheen suistaa.
Sulle kantaa, kaiken antaa,
nuoren uhrin lahjoittaa.

Säiky emme,
taistelemme,
eestä nuoren vapautemme!
Lupausta,
Sinimusta,
sulta vaatii synnyinmaa!

Karjalass' on raskas taakka,
veljeimme kantaa ristinteitä
Inkerissä pohjaan saakka
juodaan malja kyyneleitä.
Suomi, näinkö heimos kuolla
antaisit silmäis eessä tuolla?
Ei, jo riittää, meilt' ei niittää
ryssä viljaa enään saa!

Säiky emme,
taistelemme,
eestä heimoveljiemme!
Lupausta,
Sinimusta,
sulta vaatii Suomenmaa!
