As i knew, Northern Ireland which is a part of UK used unofficial as national anthem the "Londonderry Air" (Danny Boy) especialy at sports. I recently heard that before the football match between N. Ireland and Spain, it was the "God save the Queen" which was played by the band. Does anyone know if there is a change (for example: a new unoficcial desision) or something else have hapened?
Thanks a lot and i am sorry for my english.

In 1992, I have watched a friendly match Germany vs. Northern Ireland in our local football stadium, and I can confirm that "God save the Queen" was played.

As far as I know, "Londonderry Air" is only used at the Commonwealth Games.

Reinhard Popp has just sent me a note that "Londonderry Air" was performed during the inauguration of the new Northern Ireland Assembly on 8 May 2007.

BTW Irish nationalists call the tune "Air from County Derry", due to the Derry/Londonderry name dispute (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derry-Londonderry_name_dispute)

Thank's a lot for these informations. I was very confused about that!
Perhaps, the New Northern Ireland Assembly will deside to use this song as national anthem officially in every case.

At least they have the sense to not call it "Derry Air"!  Grin

(For the non-native English speakers, "Derry Air" sounds almost exactly like "derriere", a euphemistic term for the rear end)
